State, Nation, Other: Puerto Rico tries to decide - Respond by Tues. Nov. 16!

Oh, no....not politics!! YES, we are going to go there this time. This issue in Puerto Rico has still not been resolved and guess what...all of YOU will most likely be making this decision in the future!

Read this article from the PR Daily Sun and respond by answering some of these questions. You MUST refer to the article in your comment so that we all know that you have read it! For example... "I thought it was crazy how the political candidate from Idaho thought Puerto Rico was a COUNTRY, and didn't even care!!!" or "I know what they mean about the passport question, people asked me that when I went to the states..."

  • Have you had a similar experience to Dayra Rivera's? If so, exlain...
  • What do you think about other peoples' knowledge (or lack thereof) of Puerto Rico?
  • Does Puerto Rico's political status confuse you? How? What about the social status? Is PR more American or more Puerto Rican? Explain...
  • The BIG question: What do you think PR should do...become a state, become independent, stay the same, other?? Explain...
  • Share this article with your parents or other family members, what do they think?
  • Any other reactions, thoughts, questions, opinions that you have to this issue...

You should also start responding to your classmates' comments. Remember, this is a DISCUSSION with the whole class, not just with yourself. For example, "I really agree with ______ because _____." Or "I see the point that _____ is making, but I disagree because ________." As always, BE RESPECTFUL!!

  1. I didn't have a similar experience like Dyra Rivera. I think that people are mistakened about what is the situation of Puerto Rico, bacause the government of U.S. doesn't not know what they want for us. The real truth is that they didn't want us forming part of the states. The status of Puerto Rico confused me, but I really think that Puerto Rican people doesn't care much, because we are unique and we does not need of U.S. to be better. Yes, we are American, because the cultures are mixed and U.S. had power upon us. Our economy depends on U.S. is they get affected, we get affected too, this show us that we are part of it. I think that Puerto Rico must be a state, because we can be more considered all over the world, by forming part of one of the strongest nations around the world. I think that no matter, if we are part of U.S. or no, they must treat us like important people not like trash.

  2. I did have a similar experience two months ago, I bought an apple iphone from at&t and it had factory defects. When I went back and claimed the factory defects the sailsman responded by saying "I am sorry theres nothing we can do because Apple doesn't have a store in puerto rico, youll just have to send it to the mainland and it might take a couple months". It funny how people believe that puerto rico's like one of those tropical islands without electricty and thats its poor!
To me Puerto Rico is obviously more American then Puerto Rican, we have stores like Abercrombie&Fitch,Gucci and most of the people here own a BMW or a Mercedez Benz.
I really dont care if Puerto Rico becomes a state or stays the same, whatever choice they make i bet the island would stay the way it is since we basically have everything the states have.

  3. I have had a simillar experience like Dyra Rivera had one time i was going to bie something threw ebay and when i talked to the seller throw email he sead that he didn`t shipped to Puerto Rico he didnt tell me why but i figured that it was because in puerto rico their are problems when it comes to shipping like the article sead. I think that alot of people are ignorant because they think of Puerto Rico like we think about mars that their no life in it, they think that the U.S is the best country in the world and they dont know the big part in history that Puerto Rico has. Puerto Rico status does confuse me because where do we stand in the political status i think that the people should vote and and once and for all get to a conclusion if we are going to be part of the U.S or independent. I think we have our own things but we get alot of help from the U.S so we have from both sides. I think puerto rico should become a state because then all of this problems of puerto rico not being part of the U.S will end and people will start recognizing more P.R.I think apple tried to cover the problem by saying it was a mistake so they didnt get bad publicity.

  4. It all started over an exclusive distribution agreement between a number of companies in Puerto Rico over the shipping of iphone cases that once again, causes the island asks itself about where they stand politically with the United States.

I believe that one of Puerto Rico's biggest problems are its identity issues. I find it preposterous that Puerto Ricans can’t decide whether they should go for statehood, break up or remain with this type of amid commitment after voting on this topic for more than two times.

Some people are part of the pro-statehood movement while others feel that choosing this will only obliterate us. I personally think that it’s kind of hard to categorize who, what, or where we stand because it's neither this or that.

In addition, I believe that because of our island's ambigious and wavering political, social and economic status, that it will take a great amount of time to resolve and figure out our commonwealth issues.
